Over the last three weeks, I've done more caregiving than I had for the last three years!! My dad broke his arm and leg a few weeks ago, and while my mom was away in California and Pennsylvania, I was in charge of caring for Dad, which basically means doing anything that requires driving around, doing errands, and trying to see that he doesn't over exert himself. I also went and helped care for three boys of a family friend suffering from cancer. It had been a long time since I'd done any sort of bedtime routine with kids, and had forgotten how exhausting it is!! After two weeks of caregiving, I was drained!
Then Grandaddy passed away, and while driving out to Pennsylvania I noticed a lot of roadkill, perhaps by being more sensitive to death than usual. Roadkill in the States surprises me because of the lack of vultures. In developing countries, roadkill always attracts birds of prey, but not here in the States. I was saddened by the roadkill.
All of this swirled together in my mind during the long drive, and I was reminded in an odd way of God's care for us. When Jesus talked about God's concern for us, he mentioned sparrows falling to the ground. Perhaps a modern day example would be squirrels dead on the highway. God is concerned for and sustains each living thing, which after my time of caregiving, I have a new amazement about!! God doesn't just drive around and do some errands, or spend just one night caregiving, it's something he's up to 24/7!! For every single person, animal, and plant on the entire planet!! That is an amazing God.
I'm off to Nicaragua tomorrow, safe in the hands of the God who sustains and cares for all. But I still need your prayers as I go, for safety, health, love, patience, and wisdom!!!
