Brokenness

About a month ago in church, we sang that song, brokenness, brokenness is what I long for, brokenness is what I need, brokenness is what you want from me.... and I found myself choking up with anger and unable to sing that part of the song. I understand that brokenness has the correct number of syllables to fit in the melody, and the meaning behind the song is that God wants us to be humble, repentant, and dependent on Him for everything, but I am convinced God does not want brokenness.

I'm in Honduras again, surrounded by extreme brokenness. The political system is broken, with no good end in sight. The economic system has never been whole, leaving people in such extreme destitute poverty that it overwhelms me every time. The judicial system is broken, with a murder in one of our villages going totally unresolved because the justice system is so broken that to speak up and identify the murderer would only lead to retaliation in the form of another murder. Families are broken, bodies are broken, (after my medical trip I'm better at spotting common skin fungus infections, but powerless to do anything to help them), spirits are broken, we are broken.

Does God want this? NO!!! I keep thinking of Jesus and his healing touch. Jesus heals brokenness. The Lord is a God of justice and peace, and by HIs power we are no longer broken, but healed. By Jesus' stripes we are healed. Jesus does not snuff out a smoldering wick, and a bruised reed he does not break, instead his blood brings power to the nations.

In our own lives, as we confront all the brokenness caused by sin, let us call on Jesus to heal us. Let us call on Him to heal the multiple injustices confronted by the world, and heal us from our brokenness, because that is what he came to do.
