Something I've taken away from my last three days in China is a newfound appreciation for art and graphic design. Since I'm suddenly illiterate, I can still find out what things are by looking at colors, pictures, and logos. In the chaos of a million signs I can't read, it's deeply comforting to suddenly see something that I do know the meaning of, like a yellow golden arches, or a green woman for Starbucks, or the pictures on the food containers at the grocery store. Having been such a words person all my life, I'd always taken these things for granted, but now am deeply thankful for them!
The most important symbol that stayed the same happened this morning as we took His Supper with our brothers and sisters in the registered church. What an amazing thing, to think that even though I couldn't understand the characters of the powerpoint or the words people were saying, I could still participate in this amazing symbol and know the meaning of it.
So if you know any artists or graphic designers, thank them! The symbols are so helpful! Most of all thank the Designer of the Ultimate symbol of Life the next time you can share in it, thanking Him for that Life that is accessible to all through belief.
